The event will be hosted by nationally and locally-recognized stage performers, and will include live entertainment by theater companies. “American Express Ivey Awards” will be presented honoring both individuals and theater organizations. Work on the event has already begun with more than 75 volunteers evaluating the productions of 27 Twin Cities theater organizations. The awards are named after the Ivey, a popular 1900's Minneapolis restaurant that was the place to go before or after the theater. “People all over the country recognize the Twin Cities as having an outstanding theater community, but we have not done enough to celebrate local theater,” said Scott Mayer, founder and project director of the “American Express Ivey Awards.” “Thanks to the generous support of American Express, the community will be able to come together and recognize the outstanding theater we have in our community.” American Express is sponsoring the event because of its long history of funding the arts community and audience development in the Twin Cities. “Supporting our cultural heritage and cultural institutions has always been a primary focus of our community giving” said Terry Williams, Director of Community Affairs and Philanthropy. “American Express is proud to support this first of its kind event in the Twin Cities.” Mpls.St.Paul Magazine is also a sponsor. "Our participation in the American Express Ivey Awards is a natural extension of our commitment to the vibrant arts community that we enjoy here in the Twin Cities" said Deborah Hopp, publisher of Mpls.St.Paul Magazine. "We are thrilled to be involved in an event that is new, exciting and will do much to elevate the wonderful work of our local theater companies". An eleven-person advisory committee, composed of theater industry professionals, theater board members, and theater-goers, is shaping the look and execution of the event, including theater eligibility, participation, and evaluator training. The committee has developed two goals for the project: increased visibility for Twin Cities professional theater, and creating a celebration for all people who love Twin Cities’ theater. Awards presented at the event will recognize organizations and individuals in three categories:
